ANDREW M. SHAW, ESQ.
Divorce & Family Attorney
I am a graduate of Georgetown Law, one of the top law schools nationwide. While there, I served as a board member of the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law and Policy and published on the topic of civilian surveillance of the police. I also interned for prominent organizations including DeHeng Law Offices (one of the largest law firms in China), the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Appeals Bureau in Manhattan, the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia’s Mental Health Division, and the Office of the Federal Public Defender.
After graduation, I continued to develop my skills as a legal intern for Justice Helen Hoens of the New Jersey Supreme Court. I then served as a law clerk to Presiding Judge Margaret Goodzeit, Judge Anthony Picheca, and Judge Michael O’Neill in the Family Part of Somerset County Superior Court. As a law clerk, I assisted the judges in deciding hundreds of motions on issues ranging from child support and alimony to violations of litigant’s rights and reimbursement of counsel fees. I have been trained by some of the brightest judges in the state, and I use my intimate knowledge of the judicial system to successfully guide clients through even the most complex legal issues.
Since September 2014, I have been employed by the DeTommaso Law Group in Somerville, New Jersey. In October 2015, I published an article in the New Jersey Law Journal entitled “Alimony Reform, Cohabitation, and the Untimely Death of the Economic Needs Test.”
THE FIRST MEETING:
When clients come into my office for the first time, they’re usually worried. The feeling is understandable. During a divorce, a judge is going to decide custody of your children, ownership of your home and life savings, and may set child support and alimony obligations amounting to thousands of dollars per month. Some of the most important things in life are at stake. My job is to simplify the process, to remove the uncertainty, and to fight for you unconditionally from the first filing through a Final Judgment of Divorce.
During the initial consultation, I will explain the four stages of the divorce process and review the general timeline, costs, and range of possible outcomes. I also provides a basic outline of the law governing custody, child support, alimony, and division of property, with specific emphasis on the issues that are important to you. Finally, I get an idea of what a “win” looks like for you and begin developing an aggressive legal strategy designed to get you the best possible outcome in Court.
Aggressive. My number one priority is protecting your rights and ensuring you receive everything you deserve under the law. Many attorneys are afraid to negotiate or litigate aggressively for their clients, preferring to take a more conciliatory tone that means giving up on winnable issues. I take a different approach. When faced with an unreasonable adversary or an issue that is truly important to you, I am ready and willing to fight.
Qualified. I scored in the top 1% on my Law School Admissions Test, and I am a member of MENSA. I graduated from Georgetown Law and served as a legal intern for Justice Hoens of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Afterward, I served a judicial clerkship in the Superior Court of New Jersey’s Family Part, and I have exclusively practiced Divorce and Family Law ever since. A jack of all trades is a master of none. If you need help in another area, I am happy to refer you to someone I know and trust.
Accessible. The most common complaint people have about their lawyer is lack of communication. They can rarely get their attorney on the phone, and their calls and emails sometimes take weeks to be returned (if they’re ever returned at all). There is absolutely no reason to deal with that frustration. I stay in constant contact with my clients and strive to return every phone call and email if not the same day then within 24 hours.
Compassionate. I care about my clients, and I treat their legal problems like they were my own. You and your family are important to me. These issues are extremely serious, and I will always act accordingly.

“I must start by mentioning that Mr Shaw is a very good listener, he pays attention to every single thing you say and quickly figures out what his client wants. He is very understanding and is very positive and reassuring.
… [Mr. Shaw] has been so responsible punctual and prompt through out the entire case ,and has been extremely vigilant with all the documentation and the paper work.He worked very diligentally on the whole case … Mr Shaw s quick ,timely and appropriately filed paper work, didn’t let me get into bit of a trouble.
Mr Shaw is very ethical and is highly professional. He kept me informed in every step of the way.He kept me so well informed about my case status (in a detailed and timely manner)that other than a few times ,I didn’t even felt the need to email him and ask my case status and the few times I did,he was very quick to respond. Mr Shaw not even a single time responded late to my mail, the reply was always within a few hours,I was surprised at how quickly he responded, with his busy schedule.

“It is with the utmost respect, appreciation and admiration that I recommend Andrew Shaw’s legal services. Through his representation over the past 5 months, he was able to help me maneuver an incredibly stressful time, approaching it with a calming confidence … He was always determined to find the most effective ways to use legal citations to support my positions, all the while consulting me as an equal partner in defining our stances and creating our documents, even as our case took some unexpected twists and turns. … [H]e also always reminded me and made me feel that each decision on how to proceed was mine to make and that I was always in full control. The rapport he built with me allowed me to feel comfortable, at times enabling me to therapeutically vent or even share a quick laugh with, in between the high emotions I was navigating in dealing with our opposing party. He was even conscientious of my tight budget and was never anything other than fair and courteous when it came to counsel fees. It was always apparent that he kept my best interest in mind and acted as a wonderful advocate for me and my daughter. … Thank you, Andrew, for … making the process as tolerable as it could have ever been.”Former Client (Posted on Avvo)
